ILLW 2022

CW at the seaside

KLARC members again activated Hunstanton Lighthouse as part of the International Lighthouse & Lightship Weekend event over the period 20-21 August 2022, with the callsign GB2HLH.

For a change the weather played nice all weekend with a gentle breeze and sunshine rather than our usual sideways rain and gales. We started setup on friday evening erecting tents, antenna and generally getting ready to start playing radio on Saturday morning, before settling down for a well deserved fish supper!

Saturday arrived bright and early, after coffee and the obligatory bacon butties (thanks Sarah), radio commenced on HF and V/UHF, with all members present taking turns on air as they desired throughout the day and into early evening before more socalising over another fish supper.

Sunday was a repeat of saturday but with even more sunshine and warmth untill we started to wrap things up late afternoon.

Through the weekend we had several members of the public (and LOTS of dogs) drop in to see what we were up to, in general everyone seemed quite interested in what we were doing and we took every opportunity to promote the hobby.

Over the weekends operating we managed 91 QSO`s across HF VHF and UHF utilising SSB, FM, FT8 and even a bit of CW. We found band conditions to be against us this year with most contacts either inter G or to the near continent, and despite no DX contacts we were able to work many other lighthouse stations .

This year the Stations were for HF an ICOM 7300 into either a DX commander vertical or 80m inverted V dipole working from an ex-military 9×9 tent, and for V/UHF an ICOM 7100 into either a Diamond X50 or 5el Beam working from Mike (M0XXM)’s trailer. All the radios behaved well and the only equipment problem we had was a generator that decided it would stop producing electric on Saturday evening, fortunately the batteries held up well.

KLARC tend to run this as more of a social gathering with a side order of radio but everyone who attended had a good time, and thanks to Sarah (2E0NRX) everyone was kept well fed and watered from the kitchen in Jack (2E0HSP)`s “mobile roadblock” or as he prefers it “caravan”.
