Airfields on the Air 2019

Airfields on the Air was at RAF Downham Market, and we got there in time to help set up and be cold.

As you can see, Ben and Kev’s ladder safety is excellent!

It did all get a little serious when one of the radios decided not to work, but Kev was all over it and it was soon behaving properly.

Thankfully, everyone had plenty of warm gear, and as you can see we soon got set up and made ourselves comfortable.

For the record, Sarah wasn’t playing on her phone, she was looking up how far Sydney was from Downham Market as Jack had left the FT-70D with her and she had just spoken to Australia using a ZumSpot.  Whilst some may argue that this isn’t real radio, at that point it was the only contact we had had, so it counted.

Kev and Ben got set up in the trailer whilst Astra and Alfie looked on.  They were very well behaved! (Obviously we mean the dogs)

This is a rare picture of Sarah actually using a radio.  Does that coat cause interference? Was that the problem?

This next photo is also photographic evidence of Dave being in the right place. Sorry for not putting these up earlier Dave’s mum!

Of course, when the bands are flatter than some believe the Earth to be, the best thing is to talk about engines in a Very Serious Way.

Or make bacon rolls.  Which we did.  Twice.  Had this have been a rally, we would be plus two for the bacon to roll ratio, but minus one for the lack of red sauce.  There was plenty of brown though.  We’d also get plus 5 for the price!

We also had many cups of tea and coffee.

Carl made himself very comfortable on the grass.

The Green Radio Brigade had a jolly good try at getting out a bit, but had more success with digital.

All too soon it was time to pack away and head back home to defrost ourselves.  Over the day we had around 15 contacts, (not including Australia) and about 20 mugs of tea, so the tea/radio proportions were typical for this club!

Thanks Kev for doing the NOV.

P.S. Dave’s mum, this one is for you!
